Well it’s here and I am not ready. Tomorrow I will have a third grader getting on the bus to start the new school year, and I am not sure how that happened. At this point, I am not even sure where Summer went. We have struggled for sunny days this Summer, but in spite of the rain, we’ve been able to enjoy some fun family adventures. I personally do not like to grill in the rain, so it’s made it tough for us to enjoy our Summer staple of hamburgers and hot dogs, but isn’t necessity, the mother of invention? Hence the creation of my Puff Pastry Franks and Beans.
We are lucky to have plenty of green space where we live. It makes it easy to spontaneously throw together a picnic, and spend the afternoon hiking. The kids love exploring local streams and wooded areas to find tadpoles, fish, and exotic looking plants.
But when the rain drives us out of the woods and indoors, and you are craving the flavors of family BBQ picnic, grab these 4 simple ingredients. They will change how you think about franks and beans in the future.
The longest part of this meal prep was thawing the non-dairy puff pastry shells. I let the shells thaw in the fridge over night, so they were ready for me to use the next day. Pop the shells in the oven to bake, while you prepare your vegetarian beans and hot dogs. I doctored my beans with a little barbecue sauce, but you can change up the flavors you prefer, or even use them right out the can. No shame in that at all!
Dice up your Hebrew National Kosher beef franks, stir into your beans, and heat the combined mixture. Once the mixture is heated thoroughly, your shells should be done baking. Remove the cute little lids of the pastry shells and fill with the franks and beans. Seriously. This could not get any easier, and they look all fancy, yo. I just love them! So do my friends on Instagram.
Since we are in the South, the heat is typically unbearable in the Summer months. In the past we found ourselves heading to bike in the early weekend hours, so we could beat the hottest part of the afternoon. We would save those hours for cooling off in the neighborhood pool. With all the overcast weather, we were able to change up the normal routine, but that also usually meant having to skip the pool entirely. But that’s ok too. We’ve gotten creative with indoor family activities this Summer as well.
Whether you are faced with rain or a gorgeous sunny day, there are always a way to enjoy your favorite flavors of Summer, and for us that includes Hebrew National hot dogs.

Hope it is a good start for your third grader– I have a son starting third grade too and I can’t figure out where the time is going!! This looks like a great way to eat frank and beans. You’ve updated a classic really nicely.
She loves school, so I am sure it will be great! It goes by way too fast, and my sister with older kids tells me it goes even faster later! Holy moly!
Good luck to your 3rd grader too! Enjoy every minute.
What a clever twist on a classic dish! Totally filing this away for future use. Hope your kids have a great first day!
Thanks, David! They did! Too bad the post for it is still in drafts! hahaha #MomBloggerFail
Hi Karen and Sophie! What a great idea! Sometimes it’s the simple recipes that turn out the best. And how much more comfort can you get with baked beans and franks! I changed it up just a bit by adding molasses(or brown sugar if on hand) and just a bit of ketchup for the salt/sweet dichotomy. But what really makes it fun are the puff pastries and I never would have thought of that. Thanks so much! And if it is 90 degrees out, like today, serve with potato salad and no one is the wiser! It still is rock and roll to me! Thanks for the Idea! Lots of love and calories to you and hope you have a “Merry Summer!” I will follow you into Christmas. The season is just 5 months away. Can you believe it? Haha! Rich.
