I am a big fan of vegetables as an adult, but it wasn’t always that way. As a kid, I was pretty picky in regards to veggies. I only ate french cut green beans from a can. Heaven help my poor mom if she even tried to serve me regular kitchen cut green beans.
Now that I am the mom, I pick my food battles wisely with my kids. We follow a simple one bite rule at the table for new foods, and vegetable consumption is non-negotiable. My children need to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, but I try and make it as painless a process as possible. When having them try new varieties of vegetables, I start by adding flavors and spices already familiar to them. I also throw in a simple trick or two, to make eating veggies fun. My favorite tip is to slice thin coins on a diagonal from HUGE fresh carrots. It’s crazy how something becomes new and exciting when looking at it from a different point of view.
And speaking of new…I was recently selected to receive samples Green Giant’s new veggie snack chips for my family to try. When I heard the new snack chips were a healthier snack option my ears perked up quickly. I’m always struggling to add variety for healthy snack options, especially ones that are portable and meet the nutritional requirements for Baby to take to school.
We received samples of both the Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips and the Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips. The Green Giant™ Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips/Zesty Cheddar Flavor are made with real vegetables, naturally flavored and contain 17 grams of whole grain per serving. These were my son’s favorite, and that is saying something incredible. He’s in a super picky phase right now, and currently existing mainly on cereal bars, sliced apples, carrots, and drinkable yogurt. He and DH both liked the tang of the cheese flavor along with the herbs baked right into the chips. He was a little disappointed when the bag was empty.
Baby and I preferred the Green Giant™ Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips/Sea Salt Flavor. We are both fans of sweet potatoes, the exact opposite of the boys in the house. I like the mild hint of sweet from the sweet potato offset by the light salt. The chips are made with real sweet potatoes and made with 14 grams of whole grain. I think Baby’s favorite aspect was the crunch of the chips, and she has already asked to take them to school as her snack. Score one for this smart mom!
