With a whopping 270 miles of coastline, Puerto Rico has been featured in the Top 10 beaches from Travel Channel. Years ago, during a visit to the island, I took a day boat trip to the island of Culebra. My friends and I loved snorkeling in the pristine, blue water and we were able to rent gear right on the beach. Many Puerto Rico beaches have companies available to rent snorkel and dive gear, jet skis, banana boats. It makes heading to the beach so convenient. You’ll find a large assortment of islets, cays, secluded and public beaches so you’re sure to find the perfect spot for basking in the sun or your next water sport adventure. Many of the island’s beaches proudly host Blue Flag certification to ensure visitors experience clean and sustainable environments.

I love just relaxing on the beach, but for the more adventurous traveler, submerging themselves into nature is a snap in Puerto Rico. There are 14 state forests, including El Yunque, the only sub-tropical rainforest in the United States. Be daring and jump into a waterfall or take a hike on a nature trail to hear and see an assortment of rare, tropical birds.

Lose yourself in the beauty of one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays. Surround yourself in the soft glow of hundreds of tiny bioluminescent plankton while gliding along in a kayak. Or if you want to skip paddling, head over to La Parguera, the first known bio bay in Puerto Rico via a two-level, glass-bottom boat.

In the mood to check out the old world charm of San Juan? An assortment of museums, restaurants and shops will be ready for you, but wear comfortable shoes to allow for the historic cobblestone streets. Puerto Rico offers year-round sun and hot weather. Plan to dress in comfortable and breathable clothing to avoid over heating in the warm climate.

The United States dollar is the official currency too. No need to waste time heading to bank to exchange cash before your flight, and you won’t have to deal with calculating exchange rates when you are ready to make souvenir purchases.
