Sassy Homemade Pizza Sauce

I’m not ashamed to say our house occasionally uses pasta sauce from a jar. DH eats pasta a few times a week so it’s out of complete convenience. Lately he has been trying some new recipes for homemade sauce and in the process of researching came across a recipe for pizza sauce. We love pizza in our house, so this was a no brainer recipe to try.

I made a quick stop at the store on the way home. I figured if DH was making homemade sauce, fresh mozzarella was the only way to go. Plus it gave me an excuse to whip up a little plate of caprese salad.

Ingredients
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
6 fluid ounces warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon anchovy paste (optional)
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
salt to taste

Since the kids were going to eat this sauce too, we decided to leave out the cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes. DH even had a fantastic assistant to help stir together all the ingredients!

Directions
1. In a small bowl, combine tomato paste, water, Parmesan cheese, garlic, honey, anchovy paste, onion powder, oregano, marjoram, basil, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes and salt
2. Mix ingredients together thoroughly, breaking up any clumps of cheese.
3. Sauce should sit for 30-60 minutes to blend flavors
4. Spread over pizza dough and prepare pizza as desired

The sauce was excellent. I agree with the instructions, that the mixture needs to sit and have the flavors meld together. I would even suggest to extend the time so all the flavors can fully develop. We will definitely be making this sauce again for sure!
