Are you tired of all the Valentine focus here in the kitchen yet? I’ve been sharing sweet treats, fun kid crafts, and now it’s time for this week’s Sunday Supper feature! Yes, I signed up in time thanks to the thoughtful reminder from Isabel on Wednesday. This week, the FAB Sunday Supper team is sharing their favorite recipes for two. Sharing is caring y’all, but I am not sure how easily you will want to share this Homemade Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli.
Personally, I’m not very good sharing a classic Philly cheesesteak. When you ask for a bite of my sandwich, don’t be surprised at my response to “Get your own!” Now that we live in the South, finding a Philly cheesesteak is more difficult than just stopping by a local sandwich shop. I have resorted to going old school and using the frozen beef steaks. I say old school because my mom made them for us for years, and they can be really tasty when you know a few tricks in preparing them.
The best tip I will suggest when using the frozen steaks, is to cook them thoroughly and then drain the meat of any excess fat. Simply place a strainer over a large bowl, transfer the cooked steak from the skillet to the strainer, and let any grease drain from the meat. Once drained, the steak can be added back to the hot skillet with the caramelized onions. Once the steak is warmed through with the onions it’s ready to go.
If I was making a traditional cheesesteak sandwich, I would top with cheese and start stuffing everything into a long roll. To make a stromboli, I want the steak mixture to cool slightly so it’s easier to handle. Once I add a layer of steak onto the dough, I can then add the shredded cheese and some yummy mushrooms. Feel free to change up the flavor profile to add your favorite toppings too.
One last step before popping the stromboli into the oven, is adding a light brushing of flavored dipping oil to get a nice golden brown color to your outer crust. My favorite dipping oil to use is a blend of basil and parmesan. You can use plain olive oil too, but I think the flavored oil gives the stromboli crust an extra layer of zing.
Occasionally I will sprinkle a little garlic powder and parmesan cheese on the top right before baking too. My mouth waters just thinking of all that garlic deliciousness! I love that the oil helps bake a perfectly crispy crust on the outside, but tender on the inside. Don’t let making homemade dough freak you out either. DH has a super easy recipe for homemade pizza dough here, but if you need to use store bought, you can do that too. Either type of dough will work for this stromboli recipe.
- Double batch of homemade pizza dough
- 16 oz package frozen beef sandwich steaks
- 1 small onion sliced
- 16 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional: Pizza sauce for dipping
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- In heated skillet Sautee sliced onion until soft and lightly caramelized. Remove onions from skillet and set aside.
- In same hot skillet, break frozen steaks into small pieces and cook over medium heat. While cooking, turn and stir until steak pieces are evenly browned. Remove from skillet and drain to remove excess drippings.
- Divide pizza dough into 4 equal parts.
- Roll out one section of pizza dough on cutting board or other flat work surface, form into circle.
- On one half of the pizza dough circle, place a generous amount of cooked steak and onions.
- Sprinkle meat mixture with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Fold dough over in half so edges meet. Pinch and roll edge slightly to seal dough around half circle.
- Using kitchen shears, cut a few small steam vents in the top of the Stromboli.
- Place stromboli on pizza pan or baking sheet.
- Brush stromboli evenly with flavored dipping oil (or regular olive oil).
- Repeat for remaining dough sections.
- Cook in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Slice in sections to serve hot, with optional pizza sauce on the side.

So glad you got in the event this week and sharing such a great stromboli recipe. Love it!
Thanks, Renee! It’s not the usual romantic dinner entree but it works for us. 🙂
Oh, my gosh, Karen, your stromboli look irresistible!!! I MUST give these a try!
Haha way to make the Philly Cheesesteak into something romantic! I think any man would absolutely love being presented with this for their Valentine’s Day dinner
It’s super hard to be mega romantic when we celebrate Valentine’s as a family of four. 🙂 We have plenty of date nights the rest of the year.

What a great idea, I could see sharing these while watching a romantic movie together. YUM!!
I love that they are super easy and not overly romantic to appear stuffy. Our Valentine’s days are spent as a family so they are perfect for us.
I love the idea of converting a cheesesteak into a Stromboli, but I’m a little surprised you used frozen steaks. I trust you for authenticity, though. Either way, it looks delicious.
DB, to be honest, I wouldn’t even know what kind of fresh steak would create the same texture of the classic cheesesteak. I go with what I know so that shouldn’t be a surprise at all. 🙂
My husband would without a doubt love this!
