Celebrate LeapFrog Reading Month Pledge and Giveaway #LFReadingMonth

I loved to read growing up, and still do. I have great memories of my dad reading with me on weeknights when he got home from work. As a parent, I am trying to instill the same love of reading in my own children. Baby already enjoys reading, and reads well above the average level. I credit all of the LeapFrog toys she had as a toddler and preschooler.

Now Jed is now the preschooler, and he is using Baby’s old LeapFrog toys, plus an awesome new one…the Tag reading system.

Leap Frog Tag Reader 1

We have started Jed out with the Early Learning Series.  This particular level of Tag books help beginner readers like Jed, build core phonics and word recognition skills with the “sound it out” audio support.  Sight word recognition is hugely important, as a child progresses into kindergarten and first grade.  Jed can easily “read” by himself using the electronic pen, and then I can join him for more.

Leap Frog Tag Reader 2

Last week, I took the Reading Month pledge on LeapFrog’s Facebook page HERE, and pledged to read 20 minutes a day with my children.  Many studies show that the more children read, the better readers they become.  But it’s not simply about reading more.  Children who are actively engaged as they read, have been shown to regularly outperform children who are less engaged in what they are reading.  Jed is completely engaged while reading with the Tag system, as the book comes alive right in front of his eyes (and ears).

A child that reads 20 minutes a day, will read 3,600 minutes in a school year, that is equivalent to approximately to 1.8 Million words.  A child that reads 5 minutes day, will read 900 minutes in a school year, equivalent to approximately only 282,000.  Huge difference.  I know which one I will be stressing for my children.
