Start Early
The worst mistake would be to start packing the morning of the trip. Take time to catch up on all the laundry before you haul out the suitcases. Plan the outfits for each person, and then add a few extra for wearing upon your return. Non one wants to do laundry the minute you return from a trip. Having those extra outfits ready to go may allow you to keep your relaxed mojo a little longer.

Think about your itinerary and planned activities
Are you going on a relaxed vacation where everyone can wear play clothes? Will there be special events that require more dressy attire? Do you plan to take a family picture where clothes need to be coordinated? If you’re traveling to a warm climate from cold (or vice versa), make sure to check that the appropriate seasonal clothes still fit the kids. They grow like weeds when you turn your back for a minute. Also take a minute to prepare for the inevitable messes by packing wipes, stain stick, or even a small package of laundry detergent.

Make a List.
In the quiet moments before you start packing, make a list of the things that are going to be needed on the trip. If you struggle getting moments to yourself, don’t be afraid to hide in the bathroom away from the kids to get your list done. Don’t forget the phone and gaming system chargers, sunscreen, and the pain reliever/ fever reducer. Those things cost a small fortune in a hotel gift shop and take up minimal space. Review your list often while you’re packing to make sure everything you need gets included.

Don’t overpack.
I struggle with this one when I travel by myself to blog conferences. I want to make sure I have multiple wardrobe options available for my mood. But when we are traveling as a family, I don’t want to have to manage way more than we actually need. I try and consider if we can wear a pair of shorts two different days and just mix up the shirts. If your kids are messy eaters like mine, this may or may not work, but eventually you will find a balance on what they need for the number of days you are traveling. Shoes can take up a lot of space, even for little feet. Have the kids wear the bulky sneakers and pack the flip flops. If you can streamline the items in your suitcase, you can reduce the ‘stuff’ you need to track down to guarantee you bring it all home again.
