Crispy Phyllo Dough Wrapped Hot Dogs #99SummerDays #HebrewNational

Glam Media Disclosure

Here in the South our schools let out earlier than in the North.  I have a friend in Maine that said her children will be in school 4 weeks longer than mine.  Sheesh!  My kids are already in full swing Summer vacation mode, and that includes a few fly by the seat of our pants dinner routine some evenings too.

I told you last week about forgetting to pick up hot dog buns, and making the family suffer by eating hamburger buns.  Oh the horror!  So when the kids said they wanted hot dogs again, who was I to say no, but this time I decided to try something completely different.  I made these super Crispy Phyllo Dough Wrapped Hot Dogs!

For the next few months, gone are the alarm clocks and the early rising for everyone but me. Days are filled with visits to the many local parks for nature walks, playgrounds, and our neighborhood pool thanks to my incredible husband, AKA stay-at-home dad.

It gets pretty hot here in Atlanta during the summer months.  Activities outside are done early in the day, and the family heads indoors to escape the intense heat of the afternoon.  We’ve made our own puppet theaters, used our imaginations to create all sorts of figures with Play Dough, and of course there is always time to get little hands busy in the the kitchen baking some cookies, or even a fun lunch of phyllo wrapped Hebrew National hot dogs!

This was my first time working with phyllo dough, and along with it came a few challenges.

Once I got the hang of handling a full sheet without it tearing down the middle, it was a little better.  I used the  Hebrew National Jumbo Beef Franks for this recipe, and since they are almost twice as big as the regular size beef franks, I sliced the 4 hot dogs in the package right down the middle to make eight.  Once the hot dog halves were wrapped, I thoroughly brushed the outside of the dough with some olive oil, and sprinkled the rolls with some sesame seeds.  I didn’t need to sprinkle any other seasonings on the outside because the Hebrew National dogs are full of flavor that would absorb into the dough from the inside.

After popping the phyllo wrapped dogs into the oven, they seemed to take a long time to brown, but I think I was just anxious for my lunch!  Once the phyllo did brown, the results were fantastic!  The multiple, thin, crispy layers around the juicy hot dog made for a fabulous texture contrast.  Welcome to flavor town my friends!   Such a contrast to the usual dough you traditionally find wrapped around hot dogs.

With our lunch finished, we stayed seated around the table and started to plan our family vacation next week!  We are headed to visit my parents in Florida, and we have so much we want to do while we are there, but one thing is for sure, there will be plenty of family fun!
