Family Fun With @broadwayatlanta’s #TheLittleMermaid @TheFoxTheatre

I’d say it’s a tale as old as time but that’s a different Disney Princess, and I’m sure you know this happily ever after tale as well. Mermaid Princess Arial wanting to become human to marry her true love Prince Eric. But I bet you $10 you never imagined the narrative to include a tap dancing Skuttle or wheelie wearing Flotsam and Jetsam! These creative additions will have you screaming for more just like we were during Broadway Atlanta’s opening night for The Little Mermaid at The Fox Theatre.

Last night was a family affair. I was provided media tickets to preview the show, and all four of us headed to the fabulous Fox Theatre. It was to be the first visit to the Fox, as well as the first Broadway style musical for either of my children. I had reservations about taking Jed since he’s only five. He’s a fan of The Little Mermaid Disney movie, so I figured as long as it was action packed, he would be completely fine. Toward the end of the first act he exclaimed rather loudly, “Mommy. There’s too much singing!” I hushed him, and quietly explained that’s why it’s called a musical. It seemed to satisfy him, because he still remined interested (albeit a little restless) though the second act.

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Anderson’s most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it’s a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Come fall in love with the magic for the first time-or all over again!

This was the a perfect musical to introduce my children to the awesomeness Broadway theater. Full of bright colors, fabulous energy, The Little Mermaid’s flying sequence choreographer, Paul Rubin, “The Fly Guy”, has created some amazing flying/swimming scenes that complement the story line delightfully. If you are fan of theater, then The Little Mermaid is definitely a show you don’t want to miss.
